Questions

How are words counted?

Words are found with your browser's language-aware word segmentation, so text in Arabic, French, Chinese or Japanese is counted sensibly, and hyphenated words like “well-known” count once.

Do spaces count as characters?

Both numbers are shown: characters including spaces (what most platforms count) and characters without spaces (what some assignments ask for).

How is reading time estimated?

At 238 words per minute for silent reading and 150 for speaking aloud — common averages for adult readers. Your own pace may differ.

Why is my X (Twitter) count different?

X counts every link as 23 characters and some emoji and CJK characters as two. This counter shows plain characters, so treat the X line as a close guide.

Is my text saved or sent anywhere?

No. Counting happens in this page; nothing you type is uploaded or stored.
